About Notion

As a first step, we are blending much of your workflow into an all-in-one workspace. Want a task list? A product roadmap? A design repository? They are now all in one place. You can even customize your own workspace from dozens of LEGO-style building blocks. Solve your problems your way, bounded only by your imagination.

Notion is based in the sunny Mission district of San Francisco. We are a diverse group of people interested in computing, history, art, alternative programming languages, and skateboarding.

Office culture

Notion is an in-person company, and currently requires its employees to come to the office for two Anchor Days (Mondays & Thursdays) and requests that employees spend the majority of the week in the office (including a third day).

How does it feel to work for Notion?

5.0 ★★★★★ - Great place to work, and poised to emerge from the downturn as a market leader.

Pros

Notion has terrific people, management with a thoughtful point of view and vision, and many fun technical challenges. In engineering, t's a good mix of veterans from established tech companies and early career engineers (few new grads, though). People are given a lot of autonomy and recognized for impactful work. A value they profess is that they want people to do the best work of their career here, and while it feels lofty, I could see it happening for me. They dogfood their own product extremely well. People seem to genuinely enjoy writing technical specs, meeting notes, etc, here. Upper management, at least from my perspective, seems efficient and functional. They communicate priorities clearly and repeatedly, making sure to link everything up with the company mission. It definitely feels like Notion could be one of the companies that comes out of current economic conditions better than before. The New York office is a great crew!!

Cons

Usual things like: someone built something in the early days, they're no longer at the company, you have to dig and ask around to find context. You will have a hard time if you expect everything to have an existing owner.

Advice to Management

Keep up the spirit of restraint. Use the resources we have to hyperfocus on what actually matters. Put even more ears on the ground. Understand how people experience Notion in the real world and how we can make it better for them.

5.0 ★★★★★ - Best place I've ever worked

Pros

Notion is far and away the best place I've worked! I am genuinely excited to go into work each day 🙂. + Notinos are deeply passionate, ambitious, caring and empathetic, ranging from diverse backgrounds. + Notion has delivered an amazing product with a high quality bar, loved by the community, with really cool impact every day. + There are lots of interesting challenges in the engineering space: complex product & code & design tradeoffs to tackle. + Notion has an incredible company culture, environment & people teams, and company events. + Notion has fantastic benefits, equity, pay, etc.

Cons

Notion (like many startups) is not for everyone -- expect to wear lots of hats and step up often in an extremely fast-paced environment. - There's occasional product & design thrash from lots of opinionated, passionate people -- which leads to some friction.

(1) Continue to hold a high quality bar and focus on building for the long-term. (2) Review processes actively to reduce thrash and help grow employees. (3) Give folks autonomy and time to build the best building blocks for the future and avoid breaking things and introducing tech debt.

Pros

  • Extremely smart people
  • Company seems genuinely _good_: founders are generous and kind, employees get money to donate. Good deeds feel genuine (not token/for show).
  • Everyone uses Notion daily and cares deeply about the product.
  • I really like that everyone goes into the office. The sense of camaraderie is great.
  • Employees are well taken care of -- lunch is provided, and the snack game is on point.
  • The product feels like a net positive for the world.
  • Fast paced (in a good way -- people here care about their craft and want to better themselves).
  • Comp second only to a select few quant firms

Cons

I like the office-first culture, but this probably isn't the company for you if you prefer remote work.

Pros

Something that surprised me was how much I enjoy returning to an office! Don't get me wrong, I love working from home, but the energy in the office makes me excited to go in repeatedly. Everything about this place solidifies that Notion is a company that cares about its people and it shows:

Pros in a nutshell:

  • GREAT culture
  • Notinos are so kind, warm and willing to help
  • There is so much transparency across projects and teams
  • The people love the product just as much as the worldwide Notion community

Welcoming in office experience

  • meeting colleagues just hits different when you're physically IN the office
  • awesome food and snack selection (trying to resist eating hot Cheetos daily)
  • so many surprise and delight moments - the Environment team is incredibly thoughtful and creative
  • anchor days on Monday & Thursday making a good balance of encouraging in office regularly but not every day
  • there is a variety of opportunities to connect with coworkers: Monday walk & talks, offsites, Friday life stories, and donut coffee chats

Awesome benefits

  • generous health coverage w/ 100% premiums paid
  • mental health, family forming, commuter, flexible lifestyle stipend
  • actual equity education, ongoing finance education, and 401k matching
  • competitive total comp package w/ equity for everyone

Notion is truly an exciting place to be. We use our product for almost everything (cool to learn how versatile it is!). You don't need to be a super user, there is a lot to learn about the product in onboarding and beyond.

Cons

I got nothin'.

But I have a word minimum - there is something really special about returning to an office (in a hybrid model) but it's not for everyone. This wouldn't be an ideal company for those who are not located near an office (or not willing to relocate to one). With that said, I didn't think I wanted to return to an office and Notion proved me wrong.

Oh, and you may develop a hot Cheetos addiction.
